What Is J’ouvert?: Everything You Need To Know for Carnival 2025

J’ouvert Carnival UK 2025: What It Is, History & Events

If you are planning to experience Carnival in 2025, there is one celebration you absolutely cannot miss — J’ouvert. Across the UK, J’ouvert Carnival events bring together music, colour, freedom and culture in one unforgettable experience filled with colour powder, paint and celebration.

Whether you are attending your first Carnival or you are already a regular part of the celebrations, understanding the history and traditions behind J’ouvert Carnival UK events can make the experience even more meaningful.

At Ministry of Colours, we love seeing our vibrant colour powders used during Carnival celebrations across the country. This guide explains everything you need to know about J’ouvert, including its history, traditions, UK events and top tips for attending in 2025.

What Is J’ouvert?

J’ouvert comes from the French phrase “jour ouvert”, meaning “daybreak” or “morning”. It marks the official beginning of Carnival celebrations and is traditionally held before sunrise.

J’ouvert Carnival UK celebrations are known for being energetic, inclusive and deeply connected to Caribbean culture and history. People from all backgrounds come together to dance, celebrate freedom and enjoy the atmosphere filled with music, paint and colour.

Unlike traditional Carnival parades with detailed costumes and feathers, J’ouvert focuses more on freedom of expression and community celebration.

What Happens During J’ouvert Carnival UK Events?

Most J’ouvert celebrations begin between 2am and 4am and continue into sunrise. During the event, crowds fill the streets covered in:

  • Colour powder
  • Paint
  • Mud
  • Oil
  • Powder paint

Music is central to the atmosphere, with Soca, Calypso and steelpan drums creating the soundtrack for the celebrations.

Participants often wear:

  • White clothing
  • Old T-shirts
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Handmade costumes

Because attendees expect to get messy, many people choose simple outfits that can be completely covered in colour throughout the event.

Our bulk colour powder options are ideal for J’ouvert celebrations, festivals and large-scale Carnival events across the UK.

The History Behind J’ouvert

The history of J’ouvert is deeply connected to Caribbean emancipation and African traditions brought to the Caribbean during slavery.

During the French colonial period in Trinidad, enslaved Africans were banned from attending the masquerade balls held by French colonisers. In response, enslaved communities created their own celebrations using traditional music, dancing and folklore.

These early celebrations later evolved into Canboulay festivals after emancipation.

In 1881, the British colonial government attempted to ban Canboulay celebrations in Trinidad, leading to the famous Canboulay Riots. It is believed that participants covered themselves in oil and paint to avoid identification during the protests, which later became one of the defining traditions of modern J’ouvert celebrations.

When Is J’ouvert Carnival UK 2025?

J’ouvert celebrations take place at different times depending on the location and Carnival schedule.

In Trinidad and Tobago, J’ouvert traditionally takes place before Lent and leads into the main Carnival celebrations.

However, J’ouvert Carnival UK events are usually held during the summer months, particularly around August Bank Holiday weekend, when the weather is warmer and festivals are at their busiest.

Where to Celebrate J’ouvert Carnival UK in 2025

Notting Hill Carnival

The largest and most famous J’ouvert Carnival UK celebration is Notting Hill Carnival, held annually in London.

Taking place since 1966, the event attracts over two million attendees every year. In 2025, J’ouvert celebrations will begin early on Sunday 24th August during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

One of the highlights is the famous Dutty Mas parade, where attendees are showered with colour powder, paint and mud throughout the streets.
