Not only will the subject of your image be covered in powder, but it’s likely yourself, your camera, your kit and your surroundings will be too. To protect your camera, we recommend bringing a clear plastic sheet with you so you can shield your equipment without affecting the image quality. Wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit messy, and don’t forget to bring towels and a spare change of clothes for travelling home.
This is why an outdoor space is ideal for your shoot, as it makes the clean up process much easier. Colour powder is non-toxic and safe for the environment, and it will simply wash away following a bit of rain (which in the UK, never takes long!). Cleaning up indoors however, will take longer and require a bit extra work. To remove leftover colour powder from an indoor space, start by sweeping up and disposing of any excess powder. If further cleaning is required, use warm, soapy water to mop the floors and wipe down surfaces.
Next, think carefully about your shot and who will be the subject. Will they be throwing the colour powder themselves, having it applied beforehand or will it be thrown on them from out of frame? Bring along an assistant (or two or three), especially if you plan to throw powder at the subject while you’re behind the camera. What Is The History Behind J’ouvert?
The roots of J’ouvert stem from African traditions brought to the Caribbean by enslaved Africans. During the French colonial period in Trinidad during the 18th century, French colonisers would hold masquerade balls that slaves were banned from attending. Enslaved Africans were said to have hosted their own mini-carnivals using their own folklore and traditions.
Before Emancipation, Canboulay was celebrated by enslaved Africans with singing, dancing, drums and stick fighting. Following the abolition of slavery in 1833, Canboulay developed into a festival for freed slaves, celebrated annually.
In 1881 however, the British colonial government in Trinidad tried to ban Canboulay. This resulted in disturbances known as the Canboulay Riots which have played a key role in shaping J’ouvert traditions. It is said that people smeared oil and paint over themselves to avoid being recognised, which has become an iconic tradition of J’ouvert.
When Is J’ouvert 2025?
J’ouvert is celebrated at different times of the year depending on when each country/city holds their Carnival celebrations. In Trinidad and Tobago for example, Carnival is traditionally held before Lent, with J’ouvert occurring on Monday morning and Carnival celebrations culminating on Ash Wednesday.
In the UK however, Carnival festivals tend to happen during the summer months, typically in August, to take advantage of the warmer weather and holiday season. While the timing may differ, the same vibrant spirit, energy and cultural pride can be found on the UK streets.
Where To Celebrate J’ouvert In The UK In 2025
The largest and most well known Carnival celebration in the UK is Notting Hill Carnival. Held in Ladbroke Grove, London, Notting Hill Carnival has taken place since 1966 and attracts over 2 million attendees. This year, Notting Hill Carnival will take place on August Bank Holiday weekend, with J’ouvert beginning at 6am on Sunday 24th. Don’t miss out on their Dutty Mas parade, where spectators can expect to be splashed with bright colour powders and paints!
The biggest Carnival celebration in the UK outside of London can be found here in Yorkshire at Potternewton Park in Leeds. Leeds West Indian Carnival will be held on Monday 25th August, with J’ouvert celebrations usually starting at 6am on the day of.

India has always fascinated me. As the birthplace of the colour powder that fuels festivals, colour runs, events, and celebrations all around the world, it’s a country rich in tradition, culture, craftsmanship, and vibrant energy. Last year, I (Nigel Halliday, Managing Director of Ministry Of Colours) had the privilege of visiting our suppliers to see firsthand how our authentic, top-quality colour powder is made – from locally sourced ingredients to the final product that ends up in the hands of our customers.

Colour runs are quickly becoming a go-to fundraising event for schools and PTAs and it’s easy to see why. They’re fun, energetic and create unforgettable memories. We’re loving seeing more and more schools organise colour runs each year and providing them with our authentic colour powder to make their events memorable.

1. Lay Out Obstacles
Laying out various obstacles throughout your colour run course is a great way to add an extra element of fun to your event. If you want to add engaging activities to your colour run but want something a bit safer and easier than obstacles, then interactive challenges are the ideal option. Set up stations around the course that students have to complete a mini challenge at before they can continue on their way. This could include a bean bag toss, a hula hoop challenge or completing jumping jacks. Once a student has successfully completed their challenge, spray them with a blast of colour in celebration and send them on their way.
3. Play A Game Of Tag
Put a colourful twist on the classic concept of tag rugby by incorporating a similar idea to your fun run. Each participant starts the colour run wearing three coloured tags around their waist. As they run around the course, they must dodge and avoid the volunteers trying to remove their tags. To increase the fun, have the “taggers” armed with packets of colour powder and whenever they successfully tag someone, they celebrate by giving them a splash of colour.
For even more excitement, consider adding obstacles to the course that students must climb over or crawl under all while avoiding the “taggers”. This game is great for keeping spirits high and providing a few good laughs as students try to out manoeuvre the “taggers” and make it to the end of the course.
4. Get Parents and Teachers Involved
Colour runs don’t have to be just for students and are a perfect opportunity to get people of all age groups involved. Family members and teachers may decide they don’t want to stand on the sidelines and want to get in on the colourful action themselves. This could involve them running the colour run alongside the students or hosting a separate run afterwards, just for family and teachers.

If you don’t know what Holi Festival is, let us give you a quick overview. Also known as the Festival of Colours, Holi is a traditional Hindu festival that is celebrated each year to welcome the season of spring and the victory of good over evil. During this time communities come together to celebrate unity, with people from all cultures and backgrounds joining in the festivities.

When Is Holi 2025?
In 2025, Holi falls on Friday 14th March. Holi is celebrated across two days however; Holika Dahan and Rangwali Holi. Holika Dahan falls on the night before Holi and in 2025 will be celebrated on Thursday 13th March. On this day, people celebrate with dancing, singing and bonfires, marking the celebration of good over evil.
The day after Holika Dahan is Rangwali Holi, the main day of Holi. On this day people come together at festivals, events and even on the open streets to smear and throw colour powder, also known as gulal, on each other. It’s a vibrant and joyful day full of music, traditional Indian sweet treats and dancing.
Is Holi On The Same Day Every Year?
The date of Holi changes every year and is based on the Hindu calendar’s lunar cycle. Holi is observed on the full moon day of Phagun, the 12th month in the Hindu calendar. This usually falls somewhere between the end of February and the end of March to mark the end of winter and the start of spring.
How To Celebrate Holi 2025
Holi Festival can be celebrated by anyone and everyone, no matter their cultural background There are plenty of ways to get involved in the festivities;
